FDA-approved fluocinolone acetonide, hydroquinone, and tretinoin cream is labeled for the short-term treatment of moderate to severe facial melasma with sun avoidance measures.1 That labeled combination uses a different corticosteroid than triamcinolone and does not contain ascorbic acid.
FDA-approved topical tretinoin is labeled for acne vulgaris.2
FDA-approved topical triamcinolone acetonide is labeled for relief of inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses.3
Topical ascorbic acid has been studied in a randomized split-face trial for melasma.4 Those sources do not establish that this four-ingredient compounded cream is more effective than FDA-approved melasma therapy.
