Bremelanotide
As a melanocortin receptor agonist, bremelanotide (PT-141) is supplied as a sterile injectable solution. It helps address low sexual desire, most commonly hypoactive sexual desire disorder in premenopausal women, and is also used off-label to help support sexual arousal in men. Its effects are thought to work through central nervous system pathways rather than direct vascular action.

Bremelanotide is a synthetic peptide that activates melanocortin receptors. Those receptors sit on nerve cells in the brain and on pigment cells in the skin. Two of them matter most at usual doses: MC4R, found in the central nervous system in areas linked to sexual desire, and MC1R, found on melanocytes.
How that receptor activity translates into a change in desire is not fully understood. What is established is the labeled use of the FDA-approved bremelanotide injection: treatment of acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women — low sexual desire that is distressing and is not explained by another medical or psychiatric condition, a relationship problem, or another medicine. That approved product is not indicated to enhance sexual performance, and it is not indicated for HSDD in men or in women after menopause.
